The Foundation of Medical Sciences program at Lincoln College is designed to provide a broad educational experience balanced with in-depth study in specific disciplines. Students are exposed to concepts, theories, and modes of inquiry in science and healthcare. The program also encourages students to entertain a variety of viewpoints and develop social awareness within a global context. Also, students have opportunities to develop and enhance the skills essential for academic success at and advanced level.
Upon completion of an Associate of Science degree, students will have a solid foundation of knowledge and abilities for further study or employment in the healthcare industry.
Strong Academic Foundation: You'll build a solid academic foundation in the essential sciences, providing a robust starting point for further studies in medicine and healthcare.
Preparation for Medical School: This program is an ideal stepping stone for aspiring doctors, helping you meet the rigorous prerequisites for medical school admissions.
Versatile Career Opportunities: Open doors to diverse healthcare careers, including nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, medical research, and more.
Clinical Understanding: Develop a comprehensive understanding of the human body's structure and function, enhancing your ability to provide quality patient care.
Effective Communication: Learn the language of healthcare, improving your ability to communicate with colleagues and patients.
Quantitative Skills: Master mathematical concepts necessary for pharmaceutical calculations and data analysis in medical research.
Critical Thinking: Hone your critical thinking and problem-solving skills, vital for diagnosing and treating medical conditions.
Competitive Advantage: Stand out in competitive healthcare admissions with a strong premed background, increasing your chances of acceptance into healthcare programs.
Personal Growth: Beyond professional benefits, this program fosters personal growth, instilling qualities such as discipline, resilience, and a passion for improving lives through healthcare.
The aim of this program is to provide each student with a clear understanding of the most relevant concepts and principles of medical sciences. The course has three principal components – lectures, laboratories, and clinical cases. The lectures provide the information base, while the laboratories and case studies provide the student with an opportunity to assimilate and integrate the material within a small group setting.
The modules are structured to present and explore principles of biology, biochemistry, cell biology and histology necessary for the study of science and practice of medicine. The mechanisms of biochemical reactions involved in energy production, biosynthesis, and degradation are covered, with particular attention to their role in disease processes. The biomedical roles of the major organs of the body are studied together with an overview of the metabolic interplay between organs. The mechanisms by major pathways are examined in depth. In addition, students are presented with concepts of biostatistics and research methodology. The clinical communication process for health care professionals is also covered.
The fundamental concepts of law that relate to the medical profession are covered in Medical Ethics. The concepts of malpractice, including the definition of negligence and the measure of damages are stressed. The topics of informed consent, confidentiality of medical records, different types of benefits to patients, the duties of a physician, patient autonomy and social ethics are studied.
The students are presented with the structure and function of the human body as revealed by microscopic and cell biological techniques. Emphasis on the role of cells in tissue organization and function and the interactions between cells, tissues to organs and various systems and their interactions with the external environment (including gene-environment interaction) are stressed so that the students have a firm understanding of the concept of physiology, pathology, and their relevance to various diseases. A firm understanding of normal anatomy and physiology is essential to become a complete modern physician and the courses are directed in this channel.
Graduation requirement: This program will assess students to determine mastery of the course material. Students must complete all modules assessments per semester and maintain a total CGPA of 2.00 to graduate.
